The History of Frontiers In Psychotherapy.TV

Created and originally hosted by Therese Bimka, CSW, MA and Hugh Simmons, CSW, BCD, Frontiers began airing December 2001 on Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT). Originally called Frontiers: The Brooklyn Cable Psychotherapy Journal, Frontiers aired monthly until January 2004. It expanded to air monthly in Manhattan on Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN) early in 2003.

Beginning October 2003 Frontiers changed its name to Frontiers In Psychotherapy.TV and added three new practicing psychotherapist producers, Aquilla Frederick, CSW, Isabella Scapini-Burrell, CSW, DTR and Joan Wittig, ADTR, all in preparation to begin a weekly airing schedule in both Brooklyn and Manhattan in January 2004. Frontiers is now in its weekly schedule.

Frontiers was always intended to be a serious educational resource about cutting edge issues in psychotherapy. This is still the Frontiers mission. Topics covered to date include Jungian Sandplay Therapy, Art Therapy, Making Psychotherapy Safe for People of Color, Early Childhood Intervention, A Psychoanalytic Understanding of Substance Abuse, and many, many more (see the program archives).

In January 2004 Frontiers developed formal Program Partner relationships with  two psychotherapy-training institutes in  Manhattan, the Psychoanalytic  Psychotherapy Study Center and the  Women's Therapy Centre Institute. Each institute partners with Frontiers to produce selected programs, focusing on their areas of expertise. Programs produced include Psychotherapy with Lesbian and Gay Orthodox Patients, Psychoanalysts Discuss Religion and Psychotherapy, Racism and Countertransference, and more.

Also in early 2004 Frontiers developed a relationship with licensed marriage and family therapist Kate Amatruda whose website www.psychceu.com provides educational videotapes for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to psychologists, social workers, licnesed professional clinical counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, marriage family and child counselors, play therapists and psychiatric nurses, all approved by the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Nurses Association and other professional standards organizations. Selected Frontiers episodes qualify for CEUs for all theses groups and are available for sale through Ms. Amatruda's website (please visit the CEU section of this website).
